Associate Director (Data & AI Law and Policy)
Location: Our offices are in London (Farringdon), with the ability to work from home for part of the week. The Ada Lovelace Institute is recruiting to the newly created position of Associate Director, Data & AI Law and Policy to join our senior leadership team and develop a comprehensive strategy for informing and influencing public policy, regulatory initiatives and legislative debates on data and AI policy and regulation, in the UK and beyond. In the past five years, AI and other tech regulation has become politically palatable, practically achievable and even commercially desirable in jurisdictions around the world. The year 2022 alone has seen a significant global uptick in proposals for the regulation of AI technologies, online markets, social media platforms and other digital technologies, such as the European Union Directive on AI liability, a forthcoming AI regulation whitepaper in the UK, and similar initiatives in jurisdictions such as Canada and Brazil. At the same time, data regulation is being reformed and iterated in the UK, EU and beyond.

Machine Learning Student Earns Electrical Engineering Award for a Second Time
Andrew McRae, a Ph.D. student in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) has been recognized with the Colonel Oscar P. Cleaver Award for a second time. McRae is just one of two students to be a double Cleaver Award recipient. "A Ph.D. program is long and tedious and often seems futile. This award is a welcome reminder of how much the work and the graduate experience are worth, just as I hope the degree is for all Ph.D. students. This motivates me to work diligently and with the best of my ability as I study machine learning and as I pursue my future career," said McRae.
Jessica Hammer Named HCII Interim Associate Director
Award-winning game designer Jessica Hammer will soon level up when she takes on the role of interim associate director of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute in Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science. "We are lucky to do exceptional research and teaching at the HCII. Even better, we get to combine the two to shape the future of human-computer interaction," said Hammer, the HCII's Thomas and Lydia Moran Assistant Professor of Learning Science. "I want to make sure that all members of our community -- from our first-year undergraduates to the most senior faculty -- can contribute to this mission." Hammer, who has often learned the hard way how to develop a game to meet its vision, said that her training will help her ensure the department's practices and organizations are best suited to meet its goals.
Proving efficiencies from AIOps in federal government -- GCN
Intelligent automation has changed everything, and as a result citizens expect to interact as easily with the government as they do with commercial online sites. That means filing a tax return, registering to vote or paying a parking ticket should be as simple as ordering a pack of batteries. And just as Americans trust Amazon will maintain the highest standard of security to keep data private, they also expect government agencies to protect their data and operations from external threats. However, three quarters of the federal technology budget is spent on operations and maintenance for legacy systems, according to IDC, which means citizens are not benefiting from the efficiencies that come from new technologies powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). To design a digital experience that matches citizen expectations, enterprise IT must move from a back-office support function into a strategic catalyst that unlocks value and enhances public-sector safety and productivity.

Cynthia Breazeal named Media Lab associate director
Cynthia Breazeal has been promoted to full professor and named associate director of the Media Lab, joining the two other associate directors: Hiroshi Ishii and Andrew Lippman. Both appointments are effective July 1. In her new associate director role, Breazeal will work with lab faculty and researchers to develop new strategic research initiatives. She will also play a key role in exploring new funding mechanisms to support broad Media Lab needs, including multi-faculty research efforts, collaborations with other labs and departments across the MIT campus, and experimental executive education opportunities. "I am excited that Cynthia will be applying her tremendous energy, creativity, and intellect to rally the community in defining new opportunities for funding and research directions," says Pattie Maes, chair of the lab's executive committee.

The 2018 Survey: AI and the Future of Humans
"Please think forward to the year 2030. Analysts expect that people will become even more dependent on networked artificial intelligence (AI) in complex digital systems. Some say we will continue on the historic arc of augmenting our lives with mostly positive results as we widely implement these networked tools. Some say our increasing dependence on these AI and related systems is likely to lead to widespread difficulties. Our question: By 2030, do you think it is most likely that advancing AI and related technology systems will enhance human capacities and empower them? That is, most of the time, will most people be better off than they are today? Or is it most likely that advancing AI and related technology systems will lessen human autonomy and agency to such an extent that most people will not be better off than the way things are today? Please explain why you chose the answer you did and sketch out a vision of how the human-machine/AI collaboration will function in 2030.
